LAURINDO ALMEIDA (guitarist,composer) was born September 2, 1917 in Miracatu, Brazil and passed away July 26, 1995. The versatile and virtuosic guitarist was already a renowned musician when he moved to the U.S. in 1947, concentrating initially on a solo career, and then working with Stan Kenton’s orchestra and an early ambassador of the Bossa Nova sound. Almeida was featured soloist with the Modern Jazz Quartet in the 1960s following that with 6 Grammy Award wins with the famed L.A. 4. A prolific composer, he appeared or worked on over 800 movie soundtracks, including “The Godfather”, “Unforgiven” “A Star is Born”, in addition to over 200 works which spanned classical to jazz.
