JIMMY MCGRIFF(organist) was born James Harrell McGriff on April 3, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA and passed away May 25, 2008 in New Jersey. Praised for his soulful, blues and gospel oriented playing, the master of the Hammond B3 first played bass and saxophone and later drums, vibes and piano. His work as a bass player for 50s blues acts would influence his organ style, purchasing his first B3 in 1956 and studying with Jimmy Smith and “Groove “Holmes. A prolific recording artist, McGriff’s covers of “I’ve Got a Woman” and “All About My Girl”in the 1960s brought him great success in the R and B realm.
